Effect Of Ultraviolet Radiation On The Aliphatic And Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Profiles Of Agbabu Natural Bitumen

چکیده
The quality of wide a variety of synthetic or naturally occurring materials which are used for outdoor applications are known to be adversely affected by environmental factors. These materials absorb solar ultraviolet radiation leading to changes in their structures and compositions. The consequences of these changes lead to degradation of the materials. Bitumen is one of the materials which is mostly used in outdoor applications, making it to be routinely exposed to sunlight during use. Sequel to this, the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon profiles of Agbabu natural bitumen found in South Western Nigeria were investigated. The bitumen sample was exposed to ultraviolet radiation (365nm) for seven hours and samples were withdrawn and analyzed at intervals of one , three and seven hours respectively. The irradiated sample was separated into the maltene and asphaltene fractions and the maltene fraction further subjected to column chromatography to separate it into aliphatic hydrocarbon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and polar compounds. The aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fractions were analyzed using Gas chromatograph (GC). Results of GC analysis showed that the total aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon contents in the ultraviolet irradiated samples were found to be less than the total aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon contents of the unirradiated sample. The results indicates that there was a decrease in the amount of both the total aliphatic hydrocarbon content and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content of the Agbabu Natural Bitumen as a result of exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Aerobic Mixed Bacterial Culture Isolated from Hydrocarbon Polluted Soils
In this study, the degradation potential of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by aerobic mixed bacterial cultures was investigated. Microorganisms were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils of Shadegan wetland located in southwest of Iran. The degradation experiments were conducted in liquid cultures. PAH or PAHs concentration was 100 mg/L at the beginning of degradation e...

In this study, fungal strains with crude oil biodegradation activity were screened from Shazand oil refinery (Arak). Twelve fungal strains were isolated in PDA medium. TPH assay in the presence of 1% of crude oil showed that the ADH-02 was the most capable strain of oil degradation with an efficiency of 75%. FTIR analysis was revealed that 91% of aliphatic hydrocarbons were degraded by ADH-02. ...

Passive sampling device (PSD) extracts were obtained from coastal waters impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Superfund sites in Portland, Oregon, USA. O...
متن کاملEffect of Co-existing Heavy Metals and Natural Organic Matter on Sorption/Desorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil: A Review
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), abundant in mixed contaminant sites, often coexist with heavy metals. The fate and remediation of PAHs depend heavily on the sorption and desorption behavior of these contaminants. The sorption behavior can in turn be highly affected by certain soil components and properties, such as soil organic matter (SOM) and the presence of heavy metals. Through rev...
